Upgrades to items are a frequent and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They improve the stats of the item that they are attached to. All kinds of jewels can be made at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a high enough level to qualify for the privilege of having them. Jewels can be substituted with another one without damaging the original. You can only replace the jewel once in an item upgrader of equipment.

It is normal to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and make a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not damage them.

In addition to the above upgrades players can also acquire glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs offer a small boost in power and can be exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be placed in any type of equipment while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded, and is only compatible with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This enables the hero to perform better when they are not active and also helps make up for a lack of a strong team or the absence of any talent tree slots which would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics.

A good general rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing soon, followed by any items with desirable stats, but less important than the iLevel of the item being upgraded. This is especially true when an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade, as it's usually better to upgrade just one important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.
