World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade item, it may boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a specific amount.

Item Level

When an item is upgraded, its basic stats are increased in value. This value is the sum of all of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the variety of perks that must be modified to upgrade an item.

Item level is a commonly used measurement of power and can be found on all tooltips for items. It also serves as a gating requirement while waiting to queue for dungeons and raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is restricted to an lower level). The average item level is listed on the character sheet.

The level of an item will allow players to compare the potency of gear when choosing to buy or sell. It's a sign of the damage and its quality. The level of the item can be used to compare items when examining a vendor's inventory.

The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering an item with the mouse cursor and entering /itemlevel into chat.

There are a variety of theories on how the item level is calculated. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula which calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different values and gems in sockets add to the item's overall value. This could result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is often very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.

This is not the only factor that influences the value of an item. The degree of the area in which the item was dropped can change its stats. For example it can increase the Best item upgrader's haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more value than items dropped in lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The item's stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat mods on an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by the player's level.

Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats of the item. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while an item with rare tiers will be upgraded several times with higher prices.

Another way to change the stats of an item is by affixing it. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can be used to provide items with extra damage or other special abilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs) or to distinguish them by adding a name.

All affixes are currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window, and pressing the green button. It will cost a set amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other rerolling methods.

Players can upgrade an item with a specific stat, or reroll the affixes. The possible ranges of stats for an item are determined by the item level, but all items are guaranteed to have at least one stat within that range, unless it is a unique item or a God roll from a boss of a raid.

Another thing that can be modified by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or selecting which stats to boost. But, like base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats gained or lost at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the likelihood of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives players an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial in the early game, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances that increase with each level of the item. They can also be increased with the use of anti-materials, such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can spawn or be crafted with the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to increase the value of 40 luck, or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140.

Additionally there are certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be purchased from the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade item or to stop players from losing their items if it does not work.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading that item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.

The Luck of an item can influence the success of an upgrade. All items have an overall success rate of 25%, and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects can be masked by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
