Until recently the scientific community in Korea has been hesitant to engage with creationists, afraid that doing so might boost the credibility of the group. The silence is no longer an option.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word for unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has had many different meanings since it took form in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that species are evolving into different species in a gradual and predictable manner.

Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed down to the next generation.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They claim that the theory shouldn't be taught in schools. It is crucial to keep in mind, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, including fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support are diverse. Some scientists are studying evolution to discover practical solutions such as developing new medicines, while others do so to improve the quality of animal and plant species, mostly to benefit humans. What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists generally fall in two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs are less well known, but they are just as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old and they believe that evolution is an untruth.

Both forms of creationism deny the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the scientists who founded modern science eschewed miracles for fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." The theory says that God creates original species and then allows these to change over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were created at the same time and that they grew slowly afterwards. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and claim that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a variety of professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be included in their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high school textbooks announced recently that they will remove references to evolution from their books. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and 에볼루션 슬롯게임 ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and individuals.
