Jewels
Jewels are used in the armor's sockets and weapons, enhancing a stat and providing secondary effects. Jewelry crafting is a method for making them, in which you combine gemstones with specific reagents in a jewelry table. The higher the grade of the jewel the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be found around the world from Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and occasionally by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

Trinkets
Trinkets are items of equipment that bestow a wide range of small, but beneficial benefits to your hero. You can find them in the starter area as loot or personal story rewards. They can also be obtained through vendors and after completing road interaction. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.
The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but valuable boost in speed of movement and evasion. The player will then be able to acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar manner similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment, however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and only works with specific types of trinkets.
These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't in combat. This lets the hero be more effective when not active and also helps make up for a lack of a solid team or the absence of any slots from the talent tree that normally are filled with the hero's ideal stats.
A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrade-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item level upgrade being upgraded. This is especially true if an item upgrading has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade since it's generally better to upgrade just one important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.
In the beginning of the game, junglers will usually want to upgrade their trinket into a red one, while top and mid players typically choose either a pink or green ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices will have an impact on a hero's ability to control the map.

These can be obtained through completing certain milestones within the story. For example, completing the main quest for a chapter or defeating an opponent. You can check them out by selecting the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
