The wrong upgrade could ruin a weapon that was otherwise amazing, or even render it useless.
The general rule is that you should only upgrade an item of equipment up to the level of the highest-level equipment within its category. This means that you can upgrade body armors, helms, gloves and shields to the level of their most elite counterparts. Weapons can be upgraded up to the level equivalent of a sword. This doesn't increase the weapon's ability to deal damage and can reduce the value of trade.
To upgrade an item you need to purchase flightstones and crests. The amount of both depend on the item level and slot. For instance, an upgrade to a sword will cost more flightstones than upgrading a cloak or bracers. You can also avail discounts on the number of flightstones and crests needed to upgrade an item.
The upgrade of an item will fill up its diamond-shaped indicator. Each step increases the Tier level by one-third. The highest level of Tier is Tier 3. Depending on the type of item it could take a different number of upgrades to reach this point. It is important to note that any procedure that could mount a disk should not be run during an upgrade. Also, you must ensure that the disk you are upgrading is not being used as an operating system drive.
Enchantment is a feature that allows you to transform white or Common items into rare or blue items. It can be done at Eleanor's enchantment shop in the Capital District. This process does NOT add gem or rune slot to the equipment. However, it does change the dimensions of the equipment. It increases the equipment's size by the size two categories smaller. For instance an example, a Stormtrooper armor is Medium and the Blaster Pistol Small.
Universal upgrades
Universal upgrades are upgrades that can be utilized on any type of equipment. This includes weapons and armor. Upgrade components are available through Side Quests or random drops. Universal upgrades can be either temporary or permanent, and may overlap with Power Ups. They can be branching or linear.
Universal Upgrades begin when "internal technology" can give sentient beings new capabilities they are unlikely to develop in natural ways. Examples of internal technology are implants or prostheses. This type of upgrade is different from medical internal technology that seeks to restore natural capabilities. Rather, it represents the beginning of an upgrade process that alters civilizations in a fundamentally different way. The universal upgrade is a complicated process that may take an extended time to complete. However, the process can be divided into two distinct categories: complete success and partial failure.
It's similar to the way resort upgrades work at Disney or Universal. In the case of WDW the majority of them occur because of operational issues such as rooms being overbooked or not available. In the case of Universal this could mean to move guests from one resort to another one that is open. This is not meant to be mean-spirited however it is something that can be necessary in the present climate.
In contrast to Runes, Sigils and Jewels that are only applicable to certain types of equipment (armor weapons, trinkets or weapons), universal upgrades can be applied to any equipment. They can also be applied to a variety of items at the same time. They are therefore more versatile than other types of upgrade. However, this flexibility can cause problems when upgrading items within a specific gear path, because it can increase the level of each item in all pieces in that path.

The primary effect of a jewel is determined by the tier it's and the secondary effect is randomly generated players can use luck potions to increase the chances of obtaining better secondary effects.
Like other upgrade components jewels can be inserted into an item with an appropriate socket to increase the item's. For instance, a Garnet Pebble (gemstone) and an Adorned Garnet Jewel (jewel) both offer a boost to strength, however the Garnet Pebble only increases regular hits while the Garnet Jewel also boosts the player's powerful attacks. Jewels can be inserted into all levels of weapon, armor, and accessory slots, and some trinkets with rarer or exotic nature that require a slot that is not used.
Gems are a DM-specific mechanic that can help make items feel special to their owners. Jewels offer a variety upgrade options that allow players to customize and find the best combination for their needs. They can upgrade their equipment by purchasing new gems if they feel the existing set is no longer the Best item upgrade.
Requirements
The upgrade of items in WoW allows players to raise the level of their weapons, equipment and trinkets to their current level of item using specific Mists Of Pandaria or Warlords Of Draenor resources. These upgrades increase item stats and some also have special effects. (For instance Dolphin's grace gives swimmers dolphin-like grace). These upgrades can be obtained at any upgrader NPC, or by rescuing them from items containing them, with a variety of items dropping different upgrade components.
The upgrade process can be a bit difficult, but it is straightforward. Firstly, the player selects the item they wish to upgrade and click the Upgrade button. A window will appear with the various upgrades available for the item. This window will display the upgrade level, any upgrade type bonus (such as Tech Points or Quality Chance), and the cost of the upgrade. The bonus type for upgrades will be shown below the bar that shows the upgrade level.
The player will need bring the item to the upgrader, who will explain the process of upgrading the item. The player then has to provide the appropriate currency for that upgrade, and may be required to provide additional materials when needed. These requirements are based on the item's level and the weapon's requirements are typically higher requirements than armor.
In addition to the mandatory upgrade components, a lot of upgrade recipes have an 'Acceptable Materials' list. This list lists the other upgrade components are available on the item, as well as a flag indicating whether that item is guaranteed to boost or extra effect. This is crucial because the value of an upgrade Item could differ greatly based on its 'extras. For instance the gear that is perfectly rolled can be worth much more than the unupgraded version.
