Until recently the Korean scientific community been hesitant to engage with the creationists in fear that doing so could increase the credibility of the movement. But silence is no anymore an option.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which could lead to variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can result in the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process through which individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantageous characteristics. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the emergence of completely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken form in the sciences and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they aren't passed down to the next generation.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific studies, creationists have seized on the idea that the theory is controversial to argue that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from textbooks for high school which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary origins of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur believed to be an ancestral bird's ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains how Earth and all living creatures came into existence. It is also one of the pillars of biology and helps scientists to understand how living things function and develop. Evolution also shows how different species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution in order to better comprehend nature and make important discoveries, such as the development of new medicines.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe as well as life on this planet, and it has been rigorously tested and verified over a long period of time. Many people, including religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not conflict with religious beliefs as it only focuses on physical objects, events and processes.

Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their beliefs. Some Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans share an ancestry that is shared with other animals.

It is crucial for scientists to stand up for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the world there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit the teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbook content on the evolutionary history of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

While these are troubling developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reason for this is a variety of reasons. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing new medicines or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve the lives of animals and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some scientists are just curious, whereas others have an intense faith in God.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists typically fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most well-known type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the manner described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true, and that the universe and life on Earth was created only recently.

OECs aren't as known however their beliefs are as passionate as the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and believe that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the pioneers of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." This theory states that God creates original species and allows them to evolve over time. In the end the evolutionary changes result in new species similar to the original ones.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event known as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the original species were created at the same time, and that they grew slowly afterwards. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its sights are now set on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. One of them was a textbook on natural science with a cosmological perspective. It sparked interest in the college community.
