1. Roomba Q5 Pro
The Q5 Pro and its sibling, the pricier Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've examined. They have top-of-the-line motors that can generate up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. Like other top iRobot models (including the top-rated model) they utilize smart mapping technology to create precise floor plans and eliminate household obstacles such as cords and furniture legs. They also feature a feature called carpet boost that boosts the robot's performance when it detects the presence of dirt on the carpet, allowing it clean quickly.
Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our floor tests that test for bare floors and are particularly effective in cleaning pet hair. There are some issues however, which prevent them from being our first option. For instance, the Q5's navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of the room.
Still, it's very good for those who want to save money on a Roomba from iRobot and have a bare-floored home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can work when you're at work or going to school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. And, if you have to change the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few seconds.
2. IRobot Roomba
The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can sweep floors. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and effective at taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also features a powerful suction and an automatic bin for emptying. It's the most efficient robotic hoover for carpets, but it falls behind some competitors when it comes to deep cleaning.
This high-performance vacuum and mop utilizes sensor technology that can stay clear of obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time and offer better cleaning. The app allows you to modify zones and alter the cleaning schedule. It has a battery lifespan that is comparable to other models.
When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to pull back and extend its mops. This will help prevent cross contamination. Its flex arm is ideal to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It doesn't offer the same washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ as well as the iRobot Combo j9+.
During testing, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop in the market to clean an entire home, and it did so with only 66 percent of its battery left. It also did a great job cleaning a range of rooms and floors with different flooring types, including some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog turds, socks, shoes, and bundles of cables.
It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically fills up its base, and also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming, a feature that we've not seen on other robot vacuum/mop combinations.
3. Roomba X40 from iRobot
This robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears more like the regular Roomba unit than the boxy models from the competition. It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The newest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest, with advanced features including enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).
It's also the only robot vacuum or mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully self-refill and empty its base station and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.
Like other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, with a simple mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only issue is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work, or during the night when you are trying to sleep.
It's also a bit expensive, although it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and better-looking. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that's extremely powerful, but it's more expensive and make more noise.
iRobot L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device that is similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and refills the water tank, and washes and dry mop pads.
The smart robot makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive competitors. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time detection of hazards however, it wasn't reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.
Its vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vac works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home depending on the degree of dirt they are.
For larger homes it's recommended to choose one with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean one particular area of your house by using the app or via voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you own a large furniture. Also the recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is ideal for busy families.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is more intelligent than its price suggests. It is a good vacuum cleaner, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion that is cleaner than the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured application, and a self-emptying base that is washable.
The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate an exercise in mapping which collects information about your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, which means it is able to reach corners and underneath furniture more easily. It also has a powerful 8000 Pascal suction and combs that are intelligent for pet hair. You can also create a spot-clean that intensely cleans a localized area.
The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and cheaper alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed to resemble adorable eyes. It is capable of vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to getting caught on low thresholds and is noisier than the other top robot vacuums we've tested. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that doesn't double as an emptying bin.
