However, they do have a few flaws that keep them from being our top pick. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to become stuck on shoes and socks, and it couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.

However, it's a good choice, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and can work while you're at work, or at school. The only thing it's missing that you don't get in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective in mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't hold on very well and can't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. If you need to mop, the mopping pad can be replaced with a wet one in just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient at taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also has self-emptying dustbins with powerful suction and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, though it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

This highly efficient mop and vacuum combo makes use of advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste and it also learns your home's layout over time to provide more efficient cleaning. With a sleek circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxy units this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our tests. The latest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's also the only robotic cleaner and mop vacuum or mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is thanks to a combination high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it has an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It has a simple mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This could be a problem in mornings prior to work or during the night when you are trying to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally impressive and attractive. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that is very efficient however, it will cost you more and create more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and detect obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its premium competitors. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vac works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the amount of dirt they tend to be.

If you own a larger home, it is worth selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This lets you instruct the robot on which part of your home needs to be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have large furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to resume where it left off could be extremely useful.
