However, they do have a few flaws that keep them from being our top pick. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to getting hung up on shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera to see around corners.

It's still a great option for those who want to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and can work while you're at work, or school. The only thing it's missing that you won't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't hold on for long and don't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with self-emptying docks, however. If you need to, the mopping pad can be changed for one that is wet in just a few minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into an elegant, compact package. Its smart cleaning maps and fluid navigation make it simple to clean, and effective in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. This robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba model than the boxy models from the competitors. It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The newest model from iRobot is its most advanced, with advanced features including enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop to score an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to a mix of high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot vacuum cleaner uk we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, offering a simple mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's still quite loud which could be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or at night as you attempt to sleep.

Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to create floorplans and identify obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also comes with an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the house depending on how dirty the areas are.

For bigger homes it's recommended to choose one with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home by using the app or voice controls. If you have furniture, a stair mode is also useful. For families that are busy recharge functions and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to resume where it left off can be very beneficial.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would expect from its price tag. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other mop cleaners for robots we've examined. It's also self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules, or to create an automatic spot-clean. It can also be used to it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance.
