Diablo 4 Item Upgrades
The upgrade to an item lets players increase the level of their equippable items like trinkets, weapons, and armor over a certain threshold. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Costs
Upgrades can boost the physical strength of gear, its spell power and health (for rings and armor) or provide an additional bonus effect to it when it is in your inventory. You can make upgrade components or buy them from vendors. They can also be looted or dropped by other players on the Trading Post, or as rewards. Upgrade components can be inserted into armor, weapons and trinkets. They can also be affixed to tools for gathering. Most upgrade components can only be replaced using an Upgrade Extractor. The exception is glyphs, which can be salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.
Depending on the kind of item, upgrading an item could cost Dilithium or gold. Some upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests required to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum upgrade level. The upgrade to the highest level can be costly especially when you're upgrading gear for PvE.
