Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

This article examines all local research on Korean published until 2020. It focuses on the practical core topics such as:
Discourse Construction Tests (DCTs)
The test for discourse completion is a popular tool in pragmatic research. It has numerous advantages, but it also has some disadvantages. For example it is that the DCT cannot take into account cultural and individual differences in communicative behavior. Additionally, the DCT is susceptible to bias and can lead to overgeneralizations. This is why it should be analyzed carefully before using it for research or for assessment purposes.
Despite its limitations the DCT is a valuable tool for analyzing the connection between prosody, information structure and non-native speakers. Its ability to manipulate social variables relevant to politeness in two or more steps could be a benefit. This ability can aid researchers understand the role of prosody in communication across different cultural contexts, a major challenge in cross-cultural pragmatics.
In the field of linguistics DCT is one of the most effective tools for analyzing communication behaviors of learners. It can be used to investigate various issues that include politeness, turn-taking, and lexical choice. It can be used to determine phonological complexity in learners' speech.
A recent study employed an DCT to evaluate EFL students' refusal skills. Participants were given a set of scenarios to choose from, and were then asked to select the most appropriate response. The authors concluded that the DCT was more effective than other refusal measures that included a questionnaire as well as video recordings. Researchers warned, however, that the DCT should be employed with caution. They also recommended using other methods of data collection.
DCTs can be designed using specific linguistic criteria, such as form and content. These criteria are based on intuition and based upon the assumptions of test designers. They may not be precise, and they could misrepresent the way that ELF learners actually resist requests in real-world interaction. This issue calls for further studies of alternative methods of assessing the ability to refuse.
In a recent research study, DCT responses to student requests via email were compared with the responses from an oral DCT. The results revealed that DCT was more direct and traditionally form-based requests and made a less frequent use of hints than the email data did.
Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)
This study looked at Chinese learners their pragmatic choices when they use Korean. It employed various tools for experimentation such as Discourse Completion Tasks, metapragmatic questions and Refusal Interviews. Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate level who responded to DCTs, MQs, and RIs. They were also required to provide reflections on their opinions and their refusals to participate in RIs. The results revealed that CLKs are more likely to resist native Korean pragmatism norms. Their choices were influenced primarily by four factors: their personalities and multilingual identities, their current life experiences, as well as their relationship affordances. These findings have implications for pedagogy for L2 Korean assessment.
The MQ data was analyzed first to determine the participants' practical choices. The data were classified according to Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared their choices made by the participants with their linguistic performance on DCTs to determine if they are indicative of a pragmatic resistance. The interviewees were asked to justify their decision to use pragmatic language in a given scenario.
The results of the MQs and DCTs were then analysed using descriptive statistics and z-tests. The CLKs were found to use euphemistic words like "sorry" or "thank you". This was probably due to their lack of familiarity with the target languages, which led to an inadequate knowledge of korean's pragmatic norms. The results showed that CLKs' preferences to differ from L1 and L2 norms or to converge towards L1 varied depending on the DCT situations. The RIs showed that CLKs were aware of their pragmatic resistance to each DCT situation. The RIs were conducted one-to-one basis within two days of the participants completing the MQs. The coding process was an iterative process in which the coders read and discussed each transcript. Refusal Interviews (RIs)
A key question of pragmatic research is the reason why learners decide to rescind the pragmatic norms of native speakers. Recent research sought to answer this question by using various experiments, including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants included 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. They were asked to complete the DCTs in their native language and to complete the MQs in either their L1 or their L2. They were then invited to an RI, where they were required to reflect and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.
The results showed that, on average, the CLKs rejected native-speaker pragmatic norms in more than 40% of their answers. They did this even though they could create native-like patterns. They were also aware of their pragmatism resistance. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal factors like their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also spoke of external factors, such as relationships and benefits. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors facilitated an easier performance in relation to the intercultural and linguistic standards of their university.
The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures or consequences they could be subject to when their social norms were violated. They were concerned that their native counterparts may view them as "foreignersand consider them ignorant. This concern was similar in nature to the one expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These results suggest that native-speaker practical norms are not the default preference of Korean learners. They may still be a useful model for official Korean proficiency tests. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reconsider their relevance in specific scenarios and in various cultural contexts. This will enable them to better comprehend how different environments can affect the pragmatic behavior of L2 students in the classroom and beyond. This will also assist educators to improve their methods of teaching and testing Korean pragmatics. Case Studies
The case study method is an investigative technique that relies on participant-centered, deep investigations to investigate a particular subject. This method makes use of multiple data sources including documents, interviews, and observations to support its findings. This type of investigation can be used to analyze specific or complicated topics that are difficult for other methods to assess.
In a case study, the first step is to define both the subject and the purpose of the study. This will help determine what aspects of the subject matter are essential to study and which could be left out. It is also beneficial to review existing literature related to the topic to gain a better understanding of the subject and to place the case study in a broader theoretical context.
This case study was built on an open-source platform, the KMMLU Leaderboard [50] along with its benchmarks for Koreans, HyperCLOVA X, and LDCC Solar (figure 1 below). The results of this study revealed that L2 Korean learners were particularly susceptible to the influence of native models. They tended to select wrong answer options that were literal interpretations of prompts, which were not based on the correct pragmatic inference. They also showed an inclination to include their own text, or "garbage," to their responses, which further hampered the quality of their responses.
The participants of this study were all L2 Korean students who had achieved level four in the Test of Proficiency in Korean TOPIK in their second or third year of university and were hoping to reach level six by their next attempt. They were asked to answer questions about their WTC/SPCC as well as understanding and pragmatic awareness.
The interviewees were given two scenarios, each of which involved an imagined interaction with their interactants and were asked to choose one of the following strategies to use when making a request. The interviewees were asked to justify their choice. Most of the participants attributed their pragmatism to their personality.
