Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Despite its limitations, the DCT is a useful tool to study the relationship between prosody and information structure in non-native speakers. In the field of linguistics, the DCT is now one of the most significant instruments for analyzing learners' communication behaviors. Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate ability who provided responses to MQs and DCTs. They were also asked to consider their evaluations and refusal performance in RIs. The results showed that CLKs are more likely to defy native Korean norms of pragmatism. Their choices were influenced primarily by four factors that included their personalities and multilingual identities, their ongoing life experiences as well as their relational affordances. These findings have implications for pedagogy for L2 Korean assessment.

The MQ data was analyzed first to identify the participants' practical choices. The data were categorized according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared their choices with their linguistic performance on DCTs in order to determine if they were a sign of resistance to pragmatics. Additionally, the participants were asked to explain their decision to use pragmatic language in a particular situation.

They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their decisions to learner-internal aspects such as their personalities, multilingual identities, and ongoing life histories. They also referred external factors, like relational benefits. They outlined, for instance how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and cultural norms at their university.

However, the interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures and penalties that they might be subject to if they violated their local social norms. They were concerned that their local friends might think they are "foreigners" and believe they are not intelligent. This concern was similar in nature to the one expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These results suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are no longer the norm for Korean learners. They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency testing. Future researchers should consider reassessing the usefulness of these tests in various cultural contexts and in specific situations. This will enable them to better know how different cultures may impact the pragmatic behavior of L2 learners in the classroom and beyond.
