South Korea's democratic system is prone to populist tendencies. It's still better than was expected.

The country is in search of a new development paradigm. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for ancestors and as and gender-specific family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. There are indications of a secularist culture trend emerging.

Origins

In the early days, the ancestors to today's Koreans were capable of surviving by hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans, and other crops. They also raised livestock and made furs. These tribes formed tribal states one after the other in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also developed a metallurgy business, making iron tools and bronze. They traded with other states and introduced celadon paper making, block printing, art styles and written language to Japan.

Gojoseon was established in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. The state adopted Chinese culture that included Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. In this time, the inhabitants of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a state of hierarchy where the monarch and other senior officials were from the aristocracy of the land, while the rest of the population was peasants. The state extracted taxes from these citizens and sometimes required them to serve in the army or work on projects for the government like building fortifications.

Onjo the prince of Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo, founded the state of Baekje towards the end of the period. This new kingdom expanded into the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war against the Goguryeo commanderies and China's in the area. After the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, also known as the Several States Period. Baekje, the most powerful of these states was weakened by the Goguryeo's fall (676 CE) and was left with only its southern regions in Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo, and the Gaya confederacy, thrived for a time.

The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to collaborate to expand their territories. In the end, Silla, with significant Chinese aid, conquered the other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea enters the post-crisis period the development paradigm of the country is in flux. The people who are affronted by the enormous cost of the old system are urging a thorough program of liberalization in capital, labor, and product markets. On the other hand, supporters of the old system try to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments, and by inflating fears about potential job losses.

Academics and analysts are divided on the extent to which Korea's development is being driven by these two trends. This article focuses on the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development including illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also identifies key factors that appear to be driving these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have had success in promoting their views to this population. A survey in 2009 revealed that almost a third of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of those, 41% said that there was insufficient scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs, and 17 percent said they didn't understand it. This level of disbelief is comparable to that in the United States, where a similar number of people do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.

In the past, the anti-evolutionist campaign in Korea was focused on the education of students and the introduction of Christ to them. A significant rise in the interest in creation science occurred in 1980, with the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul which included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the main speakers. The event was attended by a large number of professors, church leaders and scientists.

The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The inaugural event was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and received wide attention.

KACR began publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the organization published its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated a number of films and slides from ICR, as well as some books on the subject that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members taught throughout the country in churches and universities.

A KACR success was witnessed at the KAIST University in Seoul. Students at the KAIST university in Seoul were so interested in creationism, they raised funds and received support to build a small museum dedicated to creation on campus.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, which covers topics in creation science, and it has sponsored a series of talks by ICR staff. It has also established a network of local branches, which hold seminars and present talks to children in schools and community groups.

The evolution of South Korea

In the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of 20th, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced by miniskirts and other fashion elements from abroad. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by rock and roll and jazz. In this period the famous samulnori or masked dance-dramas, became loved by the public. These dramatic pieces were performed with the accompaniment of shaman drums and various types of musical instruments.

The economic crisis has formed Korea's new paradigm of development. The primary challenge facing the new regime is the balance between the state-led economic policies and market-oriented ones. It also involves altering incentives, monitoring, or discipline schemes that have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are examined in Chapters 3 and 4.

The Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established jointly by people living along the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas and people from northern China. Baekje, one of the major regional powers in the early 4th century expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do south. Consequently, it came into frequent conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanderies across the border.

The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries led to the rise of powerful local factions. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He was the ruler of a large portion of the present-day Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He became an adversary to Goguryeo.

His rule was however short-lived. After his defeat, Gungye was replaced by an influential local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later Baekje was peacefully incorporated into Goryeo as an heir state. In addition, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized ruling system. This marked the end to the Three Kingdoms Period. The Korean peninsula was later controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually developed into powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
