The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests of floors with no carpet and are especially adept in cleaning hair from dogs. However, they do have a few flaws, however, that prevent them from being our first option. For instance, the Q5's navigation system does not have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to get caught up in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.
It's still a good value particularly if your home or office has lots of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save some money. It's also very quiet and you can use it while you're at work or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with a self-emptying dock, though. If you want to, you can swap the mopping pad for a dry one in just a few seconds.
2. IRobot Roomba
The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as quick navigation make it easy to clean and effective in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with a self-emptying bin, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.
This high-performance vacuum and mop uses sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the layout of your home over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. You can modify its cleaning schedule and set up zones with the well-designed app. Its battery life is average in comparison to similar models.
If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted space, you can tell it to pull back and extend its mop. This will help prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm can also be used to reach beneath furniture that is low and along baseboards. However, it's not equipped with the same washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ as well as the iRobot Combo j9+.
During testing, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could sweep the entire house with just 66 percent of its battery remaining. It did a decent cleaning job on a variety of floors and rooms with different flooring types, including certain area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top-of-the-line and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog turds, socks, shoes and cables.
It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming, a feature that we've not seen on other robot vacuum/mop combos.
3. iRobot Roomba X40
The robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the boxy units of the competition. It's one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It features advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).
It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that has a perfect 10 in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, which include cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.
Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, offering a simple mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only issue is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in the mornings prior to work or during the night when you are trying to sleep.
It's also quite expensive, though it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are similarly capable and more attractive. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that is very efficient however it will cost you more and create more noise.
iRobot L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot vacuum and mop. It has a number of advanced features that help you forget your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device like Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and refills the water tank, and washes and dries the mop pads.
The smart robot makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and identify obstacles, navigating more intelligently than some of its premium rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with power cords or obstructions.
Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas of the home based on how dirty these areas are.
For larger homes, it's worth opting for models that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home using the app or voice controls. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have large furniture. Additionally, a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price suggests. It is a great job vacuuming, picking up 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that can be washed.
The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to create a spot-clean. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, meaning it can get to corners and under furniture more easily. It has a powerful 8000 Pascal suction as well as sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. You can also create a spot-cleaner that thoroughly cleans the area.
The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It is great at vacuuming, but it is more likely to be caught in low thresholds. It also has a higher noise than other top robot vacuums that we've tested. It also has an app that's less intuitive and a small base station that doesn't double as a bin to empty.
