Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as crit chance and PvE Damage.

For instance a weapon that has the upgrade template ending in % will suffer 3% attack damage every time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases as the level of the item increases.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into armor, weapons, and trinkets to give an additional stat boost or effect when they're used. They can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors trading, or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment with a slot for them. The item must be at the very least upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be inserted. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used one time; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade could have a prefix or suffix, modifying the name of the item to the upgrade (for instancethe 'Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level, or Rarity, allowing players make stronger versions of the equipment with the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than would be required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A boost upgrade can modify the attack or defense attributes of a weapon or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated Crazed Mechanist These upgrades can be crafted at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them from the cash shop or obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a better-quality version of an item will be available during the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their gear even if they are unsure what will be improved following an update.

The boost upgrade item may be successful or not, the process may be expensive, and there is a substantial possibility that the item will be obsolete or even break if it fails; a failure to upgrade can ruin the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. Leveling

Each level of item requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained by the completion of Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab in the crafting table. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns several Technology Points. These points can be used to upgrade the item. Once enough are earned, the upgrade can be claimed and its additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When an item is upgraded by a player to a higher level, the original item is replaced with a different item of the same kind. This means that the same piece of armor will be transformed into a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will have a unique bonus. This can be a disadvantage, as it can cause the item to become more expensive, even if you don't need it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can roll item upgrades. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a brand new one, with a level 1 base and a totally different set of extra bonuses. This can be useful but it shouldn't be done often as it can waste resources.

Certain upgrades can be rerolled multiple times, increasing their value and giving players the ability to alter their gear. Requirements

The ability to upgrade items allows players to boost the level of their available gear--armor, weapons and trinkets that are above ilvl 385 by presenting the appropriate currency and items to an item upgrader NPC. Upgrades to armor set pieces also boost the defense of the base set and weapon upgrades items increase their base damage as well as the required strength and dexterity.

All items are upgradeable up to five times except for hero gear, which can be upgraded eight times. Every each time you upgrade an item, it is given an opportunity to fail. The failure rate increases the more you go beyond the maximum amount of upgrades. Failures can cause the item to return to its original state, which requires the player to purchase more resources than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item is not able to upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. In addition the item will be deducted any bonuses it gained such as crit chance and attack damage, as well as all additional effects associated with that effect (for instance, a higher healing over time or reload speed). However, the user can still continue to use the weapon or armor following the failure.

When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from lowest to the highest.
