It's also prone to become stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of the room.

It's still a great deal particularly if your office or home has lots of unfinished floors and you're looking to save money. It's also very quiet and can be used while you're at work or at school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. It's one of our most attractive robot vacuums. iRobot's latest flagship model also happens to be its smartest and has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored a perfect 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is thanks to a combination high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely self-refill and empty its base station and it boasts its own self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models, the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 still a loud unit. This can be a concern in the mornings prior to work or at night when you are trying to sleep.

The smart robot makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and identify obstacles, and navigates more effectively than some of its premium competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house depending on the degree of dirt they are.

If you have a larger home, it is worth choosing a model that has spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to tell the robot which area of your home must be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. For families with busy schedules, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be very useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would think from its price. It's a pro at cleaning, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using a single pad and a reciprocating motion that cleans better that most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tested. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self-emptying base that can be washed.
