A 'boost upgrade' can alter the attack or defense attributes of a weapon or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be crafted at the Portative Forging Station. They can be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear, or by buying them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals each.

The player is able to have a maximum of five boost upgrades at a time; each upgrade increases the probability that a better-quality version of the item will appear during the next reset.
