Evolution Korea

This article also highlights key factors that seem to influence these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their views among this group. A 2009 survey showed that nearly a third of respondents were against evolution. Of those, 41% said that there was insufficient scientific evidence to support the theory 39% believed it was contrary to their religious beliefs, and 17 percent said they did not understand it. This level of disbelief approaches that of the United States, where a majority of people are not convinced that humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.

The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The event was widely covered in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR started publishing a newsletter titled CREATION. In it, the group published its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated several films and slides from ICR and some books on the subject that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members taught throughout the country in churches and universities.

A KACR success was observed at KAIST University in Seoul. There, students were so interested in the idea of creationism that they raised the money and support to put up a small museum on campus showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.

In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly publication called CREATION. The magazine covers subjects in the field of creation science. It also sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also established a network of local branches that hold seminars and present talks to school children and community groups.

Changes in South Korea

In the late 19th century and into the early the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced with miniskirts, as well as other foreign fashion elements. In addition, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized rule system. This marked the closing of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually developed into powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
