Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it could boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

The process of upgrading gear in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a set amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increases when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on the person you hire and what you do. This is because of how many perks need to be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.

It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It is also used to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear since PvP is not available at lower levels. Players can view their average level of items on their character sheet.

When deciding to purchase or sell equipment, players can compare the levels of the item. It's a good gauge of an item's worth and how much damage it's capable of dealing with. The level of an item can be used to compare items when looking at a vendor's inventory.

The level of the item can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the full description of the item, as well as its ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories about how the calculation of the item's level is done. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that calculates how much an item's stats are worth. It is based on the fact that different advantages are valued differently and that gems in the sockets increase the value of the item. This can lead to a calculated item's ilvl that is often very close to Blizzard's real item level.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major component of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in various ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The stat mods of weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by the player's level.

Upgrades to an item can boost its stats. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while items with rare levels will be upgraded multiple times, at higher costs.

Affixes can also be used to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can be used to give items extra damage or special abilities (such as revitalizing dead or reducing cooling downs), or to differentiate them by putting a name on them.

At present, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button, which is accompanied by circling arrows. This process will cost the player a specific amount of gold as well as items, which can be used to add to the upgrade item gauge in the same way as the other options for rerolling.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the odds of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial for early game runs, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances, which increase with each new level of item. These can also be increased with the use of anti-materials such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be created or spawned by using the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can be improved by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) for a further +40 luck or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any skill that deals damage by 5%. These items can be found in the shops or made by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are expensive and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item if it is not successful.

When you upgrade an item upgrader mod the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading that item, and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to how much the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%..

The Luck of an item can also influence the success of an upgrade. All items have an initial success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by an additional 5%.

The upgrade overlays for items are rendered above items in the inventory. This may obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
