Like other iRobots with premium features (including the most powerful model), they use smart mapping to create detailed floorplans and avoid household obstacles such as cords and furniture leg. The robots also feature a feature called Carpet Boost which boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.
Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our floor tests that test for bare floors, and they're particularly adept in removing pet hair. They do have some flaws however, which prevent them from being our top option. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's thus susceptible to getting stuck on shoes and socks, and it couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. It doesn't also have a camera to see around corners.
It's still a great deal for those whose office or home has lots of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save money. It's also quiet and can be used while you are at work or school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has self-emptying docks, however. If you're in need of it, the mopping pad can be changed for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.
2. iRobot Roomba
The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its smart cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean and effective in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also features a powerful suction and self-emptying bin. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.
This high-performance vacuum and mop utilizes sensor technology that can keep away from obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the layout of your home over time to provide better cleaning. The app allows you to set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. It has a battery lifespan that is similar to other models.
It is possible to instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when in a carpeted area which prevents cross-contamination. Its flex arm can also be utilized to reach under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. Its obstacle detection was great, and it avoided fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles cables.
It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically empties into its base, and also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming this feature, which hasn't been seen in other robot vacuum/mop combinations.
3. IRobot Roomba X40
With an elegant circular design that appears more like a normal Roomba than the competition's compact models, this mop and robot vacuum is among the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also its smartest. It features advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).
It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score an exemplary 10/10 in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot vacuum cleaner reviews we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.
The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It comes with an intuitive mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only downside is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This could be a concern in the mornings before work, or in the evening when you're trying to fall asleep.
It's also somewhat expensive, though it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are equally powerful and better-looking. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's extremely powerful, but it will cost you more and create more noise.
iRobot L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features to help you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.
The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.
The vacuum cleaner comes with the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also comes with an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the house based on how dirty the areas tend to be.
If you own a larger home, it's worth selecting a model with a the option of cleaning zones or spots. This lets you tell the robot which area of your home needs to be cleaned using the app or voice control. A stair mode can be useful if you own a large furniture. For busy families, a recharge function and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off can be very useful.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is more intelligent than its price would suggest. It has a great vacuuming performance and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad that has a reciprocating motion that cleans better than most of the other mop cleaners for robots we've tried. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured application and an auto-emptying washable base.
The iRobot app is designed to guide you through a mapping run that collects data on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to create a spot-clean. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas to improve performance. The app also gives access to a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
It is also able to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It has an impressive 8,000 Pascal suction and clever combs for removing pet hair. And you can set up a spot clean that scours a specific area.
The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive style, much like Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like adorable eyes. It does a great job vacuuming, but it is more likely to get stuck on low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot vacuums we have tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a small base station that isn't able to double as a bin for emptying.
