Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to weapon and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item level upgrade they are attached to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged using a specialist or higher salvage kit to recover upgrade item components from items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to take on. The damage absorption of a piece armor will increase when it's upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it should be heavier.

There are a variety of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each one has a distinct effect. Certain upgrades grant armor an additional amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade that an item upgrade will be given, as illustrated below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a combination of technology and magic, which are indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. All levels of jewels are crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a certain level to qualify for them. Jewels can be replaced with another jewel without damaging the original. However it is only possible to replace a jewel in a piece of equipment only once.

Using more jewels in the movement will make it feel smoother and is usually used to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. The jewels can also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction from pivots does not cause damage to the movement.

In addition to the upgrades mentioned above, the player can also obtain glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These are a small perk and can be swapped out at any time however they aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and a scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be taken out from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components such as traits or aegis can't be swapped, and can only be recovered with an Upgrade extractor or salvaging with Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that bestow an array of tiny but valuable benefits to your hero. They are available in the start-up area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They can also be obtained from vendors as well as through doing road interaction. They can be purchased from the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinkets that a player can unlock is the cloak. It grants an unimportant but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. This is true especially if you are looking to upgrade multiple stats on an item. It's better to upgrade one important stat than two less important ones.

Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red trinket at the beginning of the game. Mid and top players however will pick a green or a pink ward, depending on the matchup. These choices will have an impact on a hero's ability to control the map.
