The democratic system in South Korea is prone to populist tendencies. It's still more stable than expected.

The country is searching for an alternative development model. A Confucian culture that stresses respect for ancestors and gendered family relations continues to influence the way we live. There are indications of a secularist cultural trend forming.

Origins

Development in Korea

The Korean peninsula was inhabited from Neolithic times onwards. Gojoseon was the first state to be recognized during the first half of the 1st millennium BCE. As Korea enters a post-crisis phase, its development paradigm seems to be changing. People who are shocked by the cost of the old system are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of capital, labor and product markets. On the other hand, supporters of the old system are seeking to keep it in place by leveraging nationalist sentiments and inflating fears about job losses.

Policy and academic analysts are in a tense debate about the extent to these two trends are driving Koreas development towards an entirely new model of economic governance. This article examines the five phases of Korea's development in terms of its political development that include democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877) democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also highlights the most important factors that appear to be the driving force behind these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their views to this population. A survey from 2009 showed that nearly one-third of respondents were against evolution. Of those who voted, 41% said that there was not enough evidence from science to support the theory 39% claimed that the theory was in contradiction to their religious beliefs; and 17% said it was difficult to comprehend. This level of doubt is comparable to that of the United States where a similar percentage do not believe humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.

In the past of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on educating college students and leading them to Christ. In 1980 the year 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. This event drew an audience of scientists, professors, and church leaders.

The success of the event resulted in the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31st, 1980. The inaugural meeting was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and received wide attention.

KACR started publishing a newsletter titled CREATION. In it, the group published its own activities and published articles on the scientific evidence for the existence of God. It also translated slides and film strips from ICR as well as a few books on creationism that were published outside of Korea. KACR members lectured throughout the country at universities and churches.

A KACR success was observed at KAIST University in Seoul. There, enough students were interested in the idea of creationism that they raised the money and support to put up an on-campus museum showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.

The decline of Silla in the late 8th and early 9th centuries saw strong local factions to emerge. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as the capital. He ruled a portion of today's Jeolla province as well as Chungcheong. Then, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival of Goguryeo.

However his rule was not long-lasting. After his defeat, Gungye was replaced by a powerful local leader Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935, Later Baekje was peacefully integrated into Goryeo as a successor state. In addition, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a central rule system. This marked the conclusion of the Three Kingdoms period. From that point the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually developed into powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
