Upgrades to items can be used to improve the stats of a particular item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost the rarity of an item or mark Level and increase other stats.

The process of upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade item track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

When an item level upgrade gets upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This value is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high, depending on the upgrader and the type of upgrade you choose to do. This is due to the fact that many perks need to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.

It is also used as a gating requirement when queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear since PvP is not available at a lower level. The average level of the item is listed on the character sheet.

Utilizing the level of an item will allow players to compare the strength of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's an excellent gauge of an item's worth and the amount of damage it's able to deal. The level of an item can be used to evaluate items when evaluating a vendor's inventory.

On PC, you are able to check the level of the item by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the full item description, including its value. It can also be found by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are many theories about how the item level is determined. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula which calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It considers that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in sockets increase the value of the item. This process could result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl which is usually close to the actual Blizzard item level.

This isn't the only thing that affects the ilvl of an item. The location of where the item dropped can also alter its stats. For instance it can add a level to the item's haste or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more the ilvl than items from lower level instances.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major component of what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses them in a variety of ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to one weapon and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stat modifications of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by a player's skill.

All affixes can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. This will cost a certain amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges, as with other methods of rerolling.

Players can upgrade an item with specific stats or reroll affixes. The possible stat ranges for an item are based on the item level, but all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the specified range, unless it is an item that is unique or an item that is a God roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to roll the affixes, or choose which stats to boost. However, as with the base equipment, this would have to be done on a per-item basis and the interface for comparing items will not show all the stats that could be that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player can increase the chance of finding items, the properties that are created by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is particularly advantageous in early game runs since players tend to prioritize defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the likelihood of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each item level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can spawn or be crafted by using the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can then be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant a further +40 Luck or to boost the existing Luck of the item up to 140.

Additionally there are certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be found in the shop or crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items can be expensive and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their items if it is not successful.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading that item, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased so high, and the probability that an upgrade will fail can't be greater than 100%..

The performance of an can be affected by the luck of the item. Each item has an average success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects can be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
