WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boosts in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. A random additional substat is also added to each upgrade.

The upgraded gear is usually more useful, unless the Item level upgrade has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as useful for those with higher variance because of the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. However, the item used for the upgrade will remain in use for a long time and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

You can upgrade your equipment at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every few weeks, to ensure that your equipment is up-to-date.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the item level, however they'll always be less expensive than purchasing new gear. For instance, upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level in the event that there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the item slot and the current level of the item as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than bracers or gloves, for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

Upgraders for items are available in many places on the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon and the possibility of getting the latest recipe. The upgrade item discount increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or quests.

In contrast to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items available at the start of Icewind Dale. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are available only through a variety means. This is both a benefit as well as an issue.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was altered a bit, with several new features added. When a player has an upgrade to a certain item upgrade level for a particular armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less even when they belong to a different gear set.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade is reduced and the discount is account-wide. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

Players have a number of choices when it comes to upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are an item level upgrade that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more special, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an important part of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that Crests are only available to equipment that is of a particular rank. Each rank has distinct upgrade paths. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade can require up to 20 crests, depending on the type or equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons for endgame gear. These crests are then exchanged with an upgrader like Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and paths.

The use of these currencies isn't that difficult however, the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. Once a piece of gear reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible level on all of their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another significant change is that crests have one use, so it's important to use them wisely. For instance, it's a good idea utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the Best item upgrade gear you have available and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan on making. This is especially applicable to items like trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The account-wide discount is only applicable when all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
