Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats.

Utilizing the level of an item can help players compare the strength of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's an indicator of the item's damage and its quality. Comparing items in the inventory of a seller can be done using the item's level.

The item level can be seen by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full description of the item, as well as its ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor, and then entering /itemlevel into chat.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items, the properties that are created by loot and the strength of these properties. It doesn't, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives the player a chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game and is thus more useful in the initial game run than later ones because most players value more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over the raw damage gain.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. It is also possible to be enhanced by using anti-materials, such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be created or spawned with the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can then be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck or to increase the luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any skill that is able to deal damage by 5%. These items are available at the store, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade item or to stop players from losing their item in the event that it fails.

When you upgrade an item, the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The chance of success can only be increased so high, and the probability that the upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.

The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the luck of the item. All items have an average success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects could be obscured by the overlays.
