The Best Robot Hoover

The best robot hoover can vacuum and mop without needing your attention, and leaves your floors spotless. Its price is surprisingly low and high-end features (such as dirt detection) are a plus.

Be sure to regularly examine the brushes of your robot for hair tangled as well as large debris and clean them as required. Some models will automatically empty their onboard dustbin into a larger one at the base, which reduces the amount of fine dust released into the air.

1. Roomba Q5 pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've examined. They are equipped with motors that are top-of-the class and can handle up to 5,500 Pascals. Like other iRobots with premium features (including the most powerful model) they utilize intelligent mapping to design precise floorplans and avoid household obstacles like furniture leg. The robots also have Carpet Boost, a feature that boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on bare floors, and they are particularly adept in removing dog hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to get caught up in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of an area.

However, it's a good choice for those who want to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and operates while you're at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming that is available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on for long and don't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. If you want to, you can swap the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that can also mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as quick navigation make it easy to clean and effective in dealing with larger particles, like pet hair. It also has an impressive suction system and an automatic bin for emptying. It's the best robotic hoovers hoover for carpets, but it falls behind some competitors when it comes to deep cleaning.

This top-performing combination vacuum and mop utilizes advanced sensors to avoid obstacles and pet waste, and it also learns the layout of your home over time for more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average in comparison to other models.

You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when it's in a carpeted area, which helps prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is perfect for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. However, it doesn't have the same level of washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In tests, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to complete an entire home, and it did so with 66 percent of its battery left. It also did a great job cleaning a variety of floors and rooms with different flooring types, including some area carpets. Its obstacle detection was top-of-the-line and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog socks, turds, shoes, and bundles of cables.

It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however it offers superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically empties into its base, and it supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming this feature, which we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combinations.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination has a sleek, circular design that appears much like a Roomba unit than the boxy models of the rivals. It is one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It has advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score 100% in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely self-refill and empty its base station, and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has an easy mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's a noisy unit which could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work or at night as you try to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, though it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and more attractive. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that's extremely powerful, but it's going to cost you more and make more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that let you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take the care of mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot vacuum cleaner uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its top rivals. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards, though this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home according to how dirty they are.

For larger houses, it's worth opting for models with zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a particular area of your house by using the app or via voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you own a lot furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off can be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price would suggest. It is a great job cleaning, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using one pad and a reciprocating movement that cleans better that most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, set up a spot clean or to prioritize your most filthy rooms for better performance. The app also provides access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, which means it can reach corners and under furniture more easily. It also has a strong 8,000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for pet hair. It also has the ability to create a spot-clean that intensely cleans a localized area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker, cheaper alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed to resemble cute little eyes. It is great at vacuuming, but it is more likely to be stuck on low thresholds. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums that we have test. It also comes with an app that's not as intuitive and has a tiny base station that can't double as a bin to empty.
