The democratic system in South Korea is vulnerable to populist impulses. However, it is more stable than might be expected.
The country is searching for a new paradigm of development. A Confucian culture that values respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relations continues to influence the society. There are signs that a secularist culture is emerging.
Origins
In the prehistoric era the ancestors of modern Koreans survived by hunting and gathering wild food. In the tens of thousands of years after, they began to grow crops including millet and beans. They also raised livestock and produced furs. These people formed tribal states one after another in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also established a metallurgy industry, producing bronze and later iron tools. They traded with other countries and introduced celadon and block printing to Japan, as well as art styles, a written language, and paper making.
Gojoseon was established in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. This state adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. During this period the people of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon had a hierarchical structure that included a monarch as well as high-ranking officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy whereas the majority of the population was peasants. The state took taxes from these citizens, and sometimes forced them to serve in the army or to build fortifications.
Onjo, a prince from Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo, founded the state of Baekje at the end of the time. This new kingdom expanded its territory to the southwest of the peninsula and clashed with Goguryeo and China's commandos in the region. Baekje accepted Confucian ideas in its state beliefs system in 1390 CE and established the male-centric notion of filiopiety a tenet. In the name of filiopiety, fathers were responsible to their families. They had to be obeyed by everyone and respected by their grandchildren and children.
Goryeo, which would rule from 918 to 1392 CE introduced the world to the Hangul alphabet that was based on the shapes formed by the mouth when it was pronounced. This greatly improved communication and led to a rise in the writing of Buddhist text. Woodblock printing and movable type were also refined. In 1145 CE the Samguk Sagi, or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was recorded for the first time.
Development in Korea
The Korean peninsula has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times and early evidence of human settlements is evident in the form of graves lined with stone, with precious objects like amazonite jewellery being buried along with the dead. Megalithic structures known as dolmens, made of massive single stones, are prevalent throughout the country.
In the first part of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognizable political state. After that the peninsula was ruled by various states in the Three Kingdoms period (57 BC- 635 CE) including Baekje Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. In addition, the northern region of the peninsula was ruled by the Balhae kingdom, which most historians do not believe to be a valid Korean state.
After the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, also known as the Several States Period. Baekje, the most powerful of these states was diminished by the Goguryeo's fall (676 CE) and was left with only its southern territories in Manchuria and the the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo, and the Gaya confederacy, thrived for a short period of time.
The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to work together in order to expand their territory. In the end, Silla, with significant Chinese assistance, defeated all other states and united the peninsula in 935 CE.
As Korea is entering a post-crisis period the way it develops appears to be changing. People who are shocked by the enormous costs of the old systems are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of capital, labor and product markets. On the other hand champions of the old system are seeking to preserve it by leveraging nationalist sentiments and generating fear of job loss.
Academics and analysts are divided about the extent to which Korea's development is influenced by these two trends. This article reviews the latest developments by analyzing five phases of Korea's political development: democratic illiberalism (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) and authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87) democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and democratic participation (2002 to the present). This article also identifies some important factors that appear to influence these processes.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their beliefs to this group. A survey in 2009 found that nearly a third of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs. 17 percent said they didn't understand it. This level of disbelief is similar to the United States where a similar percentage do not believe humans evolved from less advanced types of life.
In the past, the anti-evolution campaign in Korea was focused on teaching students and in bringing Christ to them. In 1980 an all-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. The event attracted a large audience of scientists, professors and church leaders.
The success of the event led to the creation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31, 1980. The inaugural event was widely reported in the national press, 에볼루션 슬롯바카라; browse this site, 에볼루션 슬롯 including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and also attracted a lot of attention.
KACR started publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the organization published its own activities and published articles on the scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated several films and slides from ICR and also a few books on creationism that were already in print outside of Korea. KACR members taught throughout the country at universities and churches.
One example of one KACR success story occurred at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, there were enough students interested in the idea of creationism that they raised the funds and support needed to build a small museum on campus with creationist fossil models and 에볼루션 게이밍 other exhibits.
In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine, CREATION, that covers topics related to creation science, and it has sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also established local branches that hold seminars and give talks to schoolchildren and community groups.
Evolution in South Korea
In the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional hanbok, or Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other style elements imported from abroad. In the same way, traditional Korean music styles were replaced by contemporary jazz and rock and roll. In this period the famous samulnori or masked dance-dramas, were popular with the public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drummers and other musical instruments.
The economic crisis has shaped Korea's new development paradigm. The main challenge for the new regime is to find the right balance between state-led economic policies and market-based ones. It also involves changing the incentives monitoring and discipline schemes that have been a part of the pre-crisis system. These issues are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4.
Baekje, founded by Onjo the prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo was established by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo and other areas and also by a migrant from northern China. Baekje, an important regional power in the early 4th Century extended its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. Consequently, it came into frequent conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanderies across the border.
The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries led to the development of powerful local factions. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as the capital. He controlled a part of today's Jeolla province as well as Chungcheong. Later, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival of Goguryeo.
However the rule of his was short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935, and then united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla, later incorporated Baekje into Goryeo and acted as a peaceful successor. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized government system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly developed into powerful states on the peninsula, and in Manchuria.
