WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boosts in specific stats. Each upgrade increases item Level Upgrade level by +3. Each upgrade also boosts an unspecified substat.

Upgraded gear generally sees higher trade value as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or a very high stat variance (like the eth titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as useful for those with higher variance because of the requirement to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to Enchantments.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and is accessible anytime to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear up-to-date, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each several weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item upgrades, however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new gear. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for different currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will display the item's next upgrade item level when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the item slot and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currency types.

Upgraders for items can be found in a variety of locations including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade item coupon and a possibility of obtaining an entirely new recipe. The discount for upgrading increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players finish certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only available via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit and an issue.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was altered a bit, with several new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a certain item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading additional items to that same item level will cost less even if they are part of a different gear set.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is account-wide. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is reduced too, but it is only available once certain milestones are reached.

Crests

When it comes to upgrading equipment in WoW players have a couple of choices. Flightstones are an item that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1 and are available in 4 ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests are only able to be used to purchase equipment of a particular rank, and each rank has its own requirements for its upgrade path. The simplest and easiest upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complex upgrade can require up to 20 crests, based on the type of equipment being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through completing content at the appropriate level. This could be done by doing outdoor activities or taking on dungeons and raids of all difficulties to get lower-tier gear or Mythic+ raid bosses or dungeons with a heroic difficulty to obtain endgame gear. Crests can be exchanged at an upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade item routes and steps.

The new currency system isn't complicated to use, but it does bring some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another significant change is that crests only have one use therefore it's essential to use them wisely. For instance, it's best to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the best equipment available and save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to create. This is particularly applicable to rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character that will be able to avail the account-wide discount if all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
