Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Usually, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, while objects with strong bases, such as eth titans do not vary in their stats following being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They can be used as an attribute benefit, or extra effect, while the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, or found in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. To upgrade a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players will have to select it and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from the previous versions in a few fundamental ways. Gear is now divided into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before being "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level up however the materials required do not increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of those items rather than spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

If an item does not reach its maximum level, the NPC grants players the option to transfer it to a different character and re-infuse the item with a different set of upgrades.
