Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. They also increase bonuses such as PvE damage and crit chance.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into armor, weapons and trinkets to provide a stat bonus or extra effect while they're in use. These can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment with a slot for them; the item must have been at the very least upgraded to blue level for a component to be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascended equipment, as well other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging gear that is ascended or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade can include a suffix or prefix that alters the name of the item to which it is used (for instance 'Canthan Armor Insignia' becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades can increase the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, allowing players create stronger versions with fewer upgrade crystals than they require to reach the same level using normal methods.

A boost upgrade can modify the attack or defense attributes of a weapon or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be created at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them in the cash shop or by collecting them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.

Each upgrade increases the chance that a higher-tier version of an item will be dropped in the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to continue improving their equipment, even if they're unsure of how much they'll improve following a subsequent reset.

The process of upgrading an item can be expensive and it is likely that the item will eventually become obsolete or even break when the upgrade is unsuccessful. Upgrade Crystals and assist powder are also destroyed if the upgrade fails. Cash shop items can be used to reduce or eliminate the possibility of failure. Some upgrades also offer the player a bonus if they are they are reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade elements that can be placed in special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs increase the power of nodes within a radius, and include any pre-existing affixes. Glyphs can be upgraded various ways, and we suggest getting them to level 15 whenever you can.

You will often find in the endgame that putting Glyphs is the best way to upgrade your gear. They are the only upgrade components which can be upgraded to level 15 and offer significant boosts to your power on the Paragon Board.

Most of the upgrades in the game can be replaced, however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and put back in place without restriction. The only exception is legendary equipment, which requires an Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and re-place.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you choose it in your inventory. You can replace it with another Glyph that is the same or higher rank to boost the value of the Glyph.

There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of the Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain tools for gathering unlimited use, and through Faction Crypt raids. Every Faction Crypt will drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs which you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs then you have to attach them to your gear. Each Glyph unlocks a special bonus that boosts a specific set of stat nodes within a radius around the Glyph. This will either be +40 for one of your primary stats, or +25 for two of your secondary stats, based on the Glyph.

Glyphs will increase the number of nodes connected to them, which is why it is best to put Glyphs in strategic locations on the Graph. This will maximize the impact. For example an Druid should aim to place their Glyphs near their primary damage points, but you should also be sure to place them near the most critical damage nodes, too.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to increase the stats of specific items by putting upgraded components in them. This is commonly known as "upping". Every upgradeable item is assigned a level that determines the final statistics. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum of 385 ilvl. Each item level requires different components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient is obtained from the completion of Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or on the upgrade tab in the crafting table. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed results in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used to leveling up an item. When enough points have been earned you will be able to claim your upgrade and also receive the bonuses.

When the player upgrades an item it is replaced by a new item of the same type. This means that the same armor piece will become an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item also comes with its own bonus. This could be a drawback in that it could make the item more expensive if you don't require it.

Upgrades to items can be rerolled, if the player has enough tokens to be able to do this. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a new one, with an initial level and a completely different set of bonuses. This is a good option for certain items, however it's not something that should be repeated often, as it can use up a lot of resources.

Some upgrades can increase their value and allow players to personalize their gear. Requirements

If an item fails to upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. Additionally, the item will lose any bonuses it gained such as crit chance and attack damage, and all other effects that are associated with that effect (for instance, a higher healing over time or speed of reload). However, the player can continue to use the weapon or armor following the failure.

Whenever an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest. This means that should a weapon gain an increase in its crit chance the increase is applied before any increase in attack damage. A new attribute known as Slots is now added to the definition of the item and the value is recomputed each time an upgrade is applied.

The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating and number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equal to its base value.
