Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our bare floor tests and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our first option. For one, the Q5's navigation system does not have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to become entangled in shoes and socks and can't navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.

It's still a good value, especially if your office or home has lots of unfinished floors and you want to save some money. It's also quiet and operates while you're at work or in school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with a self-emptying dock, though. If you want to, you can switch the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a compact, sleek package. Its intelligent cleaning maps and fluid navigation make it simple to clean and effective in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also features strong suction and an automatic vacuum cleaner bin for emptying. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, but it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This top-performing mop and vacuum combination uses advanced sensor technology to avoid obstacles and pet waste and it learns your home's layout over time to provide more efficient cleaning. You can alter its cleaning schedule and set up zones with the well-designed app. It has a battery life that is similar to other models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to pull back and extend its mop. This helps prevent cross-contamination. It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums it, something hasn't been seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

This robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the boxy units of the competition. It is one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that has a perfect 10 in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to use. It comes with an intuitive mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite loud which could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, but it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally powerful and look better. If you're willing with a little more noise and some additional cost this is a capable two-in-one that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot cleaner vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that will let you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floorplans and identify obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its top competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with the degree of dirt they are.

For larger houses it's recommended to choose a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home by using the app or voice controls. A stairway mode is useful if you own a large furniture. For busy families, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to resume where it left off could be very useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you would think from its price. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad that has an oscillating motion that cleans better than most of the other mop cleaners for robots we've tested. It's also self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to create a spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app comes with a variety of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It features an impressive 8,000 Pascal suction, as well as intelligent combs to remove pet hair. You can also set up a spot clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.
