Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection explains that in time, creatures more adaptable to changing environments survive and those that are not extinct. This process of evolution in biology is what science is all about.
What is Evolution?
The term "evolution" could have many nonscientific meanings. For instance it could mean "progress" and "descent with modifications." It is an academic term that is used to describe the process of change of traits over time in organisms or species. In terms of biology, this change is caused by natural selection and genetic drift.
Evolution is a central tenet of modern biology. It is a well-supported theory that has stood the tests of time and thousands of scientific experiments. It does not address spiritual beliefs or God's presence like other scientific theories such as the Copernican or germ theory of diseases.
Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck believed that certain physical traits were predetermined to change in a stepped-like manner over time. This was known as the "Ladder of Nature" or scala Naturae. Charles Lyell first used this term in 1833 in his Principles of Geology.
Darwin published his theory of evolution in his book On the Origin of Species, written in the early 1800s. It asserts that all species of organisms have a common ancestry which can be traced through fossils and other evidence. This is the modern view of evolution, which is supported by a variety of lines of research in science, including molecular genetics.
Scientists do not know how organisms evolved however they are certain that natural selection and genetic drift are the reason for the evolution of life. Individuals with advantageous traits are more likely to live and reproduce, and these individuals transmit their genes to the next generation. Over time the gene pool gradually changes and evolves into new species.
Some scientists also employ the term evolution to refer to large-scale changes in evolutionary processes, such as the formation of a new species from an ancestral species. Others, like population geneticists, define the term "evolution" more broadly by referring a net change in the frequency of alleles across generations. Both definitions are correct and acceptable, however certain scientists argue that allele frequency definitions do not include important aspects of evolutionary process.
Origins of Life
The emergence of life is an essential step in evolution. This happens when living systems begin to develop at the micro level - within individual cells, for example.
The origins of life are a topic in many disciplines, including biology, chemistry and geology. The question of how living things got their start is of particular importance in science since it poses an important challenge to the theory of evolution. These include the reading and re-reading of complex molecules, like DNA or RNA, to create proteins that perform a particular function. These chemical reactions are comparable to a chicken-and egg problem: the emergence and development of DNA/RNA, the protein-based cell machinery, is required for the beginning of life. But, without life, the chemistry required to enable it does appear to work.
Abiogenesis research requires collaboration between scientists from different fields. This includes prebiotic scientists, astrobiologists and planetary scientists.
Evolutionary Changes
The term "evolution" is typically used to describe the accumulated changes in the genetic characteristics of an entire population over time. These changes may result from adaptation to environmental pressures, as described in the entry on Darwinism (see the entry on Charles Darwin for background) or natural selection.
This mechanism also increases the number of genes that confer an advantage for survival in an animal, resulting in an overall change in the appearance of a group. The specific mechanisms responsible for these evolutionary changes include mutation, reshuffling of genes during sexual reproduction, and also gene flow between populations.
Natural selection is the process that makes beneficial mutations more common. All organisms undergo changes and reshuffles in their genes. This happens because, as mentioned above, those individuals with the advantageous trait are likely to have a higher fertility rate than those who do not have it. This variation in the number of offspring that are produced over many generations can result in a gradual change in the number of advantageous traits in a group.
This can be seen in the evolution of different beak designs on finches that are found in the Galapagos Islands. They have created these beaks to ensure that they can eat more easily in their new environment. These changes in shape and form could also help create new organisms.
The majority of the changes that occur are caused by a single mutation, but occasionally several will happen at once. The majority of these changes are not harmful or even harmful to the organism but a small percentage can have a positive impact on the survival of the organism and its reproduction, thereby increasing the frequency of these changes in the population over time. Origins of Humans
