Narwal Freo X Ultra
The Freo X Ultra, a highly-rated and functional Gen 4 robotic vacuum and mop, is a well made machine. The $1400 list price could be a bit steep, but it's often available to make it more affordable. The unit looks stunning, and the base takes up little room in the corner of your home.
The design of this robot is able to address some of the issues we have encountered with other robotic vacuum and mop units, such as the brushes getting tangled in hair, and the vacuum brush being unable to reach bare floors underneath furniture. The performance of the sweeper on carpets and bare floors is also impressive. The vacuum/mop unit has a high amount of debris collection and the mop is able to absorb the bare floor quickly.
The mops also use an intelligent system to clean along the edges of furniture and walls. The robot can handle the largest obstacles like toys, food bowls, shoes, and backpacks without any issue. It can get tangled or entangled with smaller, less hefty objects like shoelaces and USB cables and pen.
This robot was used to mop and vacuum hardwood flooring FLOR carpet tiles, as well as pile rugs in a large open-plan home. With FREO Mind enabled, it cleaned and mopped the 90m2 area in about 170 minutes which is about average for Gen 4.
Certain features differentiate this robot cleaner from other robots in its class. The Freo X Ultra has a array of sensors, software, and hardware improvements engineered to keep it at the top of its game. It claims 3.5 hours of autonomy in environments up 260m2.
Freo's app lets you customize multiple functions, including how often the robot comes back to the base station. You can also alter the frequency of mopping as well as the power level (silent, smart), or the mopping humidity. The app can even detect heavily soiled areas and create an efficient cleaning route, and give detergent out or raise the pads on carpet.
Other impressive features include a fast charging battery, an easy-to-read display on the robot's underside and a practical dock door that opens easily. The Freo X Ultra is the ideal vacuum and mop for homeowners and apartment owners who want to cut down on their chores, while keeping their homes tidy and clean.
Miele Scout RX3
Miele has a reputation of quality and innovation in the field of robotic vacuuming. The new Miele robot is designed to take the cleaning performance to a new level with its smart features.
The RX3 has a dual-suction system smart mapping system that includes 3D mapping, and cameras that send a real-time image to your smartphone. The RX3's powerful four-stage system for cleaning provides excellent dust removal on hard and carpet floors, while its easy-to-use side brushes that swing out and dual suction channels clean in corners. The 8.5 cm height means it can get under low furniture, while front cameras and infrared sensors help it navigate around obstacles and thresholds easily.
The Scout RX3 impressed us in our test on how well it cleaned baking powder from baseboards and corners. Its 2,500Pa suction was weaker than other robots but it was still very quiet and swift in its movements. It didn't mop and its removable cleaning pad was a challenge to attach. It also was unable to take on dirt that had dried up.
Its app lacks advanced features, such as multiple cleaning modes or automated scheduling. It does work with Alexa however, its voice controls aren't very intuitive or responsive. It's also a bit sporadic when it returns to the charging station after a run. Other robots can follow an obstruction or follow a previous route however, the RX3 stumbles around until it finally gives up.
Another issue we faced was with its intelligent features, specifically the mapping function and digital keep-out zones. It was great at keeping our shoes and furniture legs away, but it was easily caught on socks, cables, and rugs. We didn't include the Scout RX3 in our Best Buy list. With a decent price and impressive performance, the Scout RX3 is worth considering when you're looking for an alternative to traditional uprights.
