The latest model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It features advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).
It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored a perfect 10 in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully self-refill and empty its base station and it has an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.
Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with an intuitive mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in mornings prior to work or in the evening when you're trying to fall asleep.
It's also quite expensive but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that is very efficient, but it will cost you more and produce more noise.
iRobot L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a lot of advanced features that let you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank and washes and dries its mop pads.
The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and detect obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also mopses using one pad and a reciprocating movement which is cleaner than the majority of the mop cleaners with robots that vacuum and mop that we've examined. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying washable base.
The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map.
