Evolution Korea

The democratic system in South Korea is vulnerable to populist impulses. It is still healthier than we had hoped for.

The country is looking for a new paradigm of development. A Confucian culture that emphasizes respect for ancestors and gendered family relations continues influence the way we live. But there are signs that a secularist culture is emerging.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of the today's Koreans were capable of surviving by hunting and gathering wild food. About 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans and other crops. They also raised livestock, and even made furs. These people formed tribal states one after the other in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also created a metallurgy business, making iron tools, including bronze. In 2333 BCE Gojoseon was founded in the southern part of the peninsula. The state embraced Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian philosophy. As Korea enters a post-crisis era the way it develops appears to be in flux. KACR started publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the organization reported on its own activities and published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated a number of slides and film strips from ICR and several books on creationism that were published outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures in churches and universities throughout the country.

One instance of a KACR success story occurred at the KAIST university in Seoul. Students at the KAIST university in Seoul were so interested in creationism, they raised money and got support to build a small museum dedicated to creation on campus.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, which covers topics in the field of creation science, and it has sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935, and then united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla and later joined Baekje into Goryeo peacefully as a successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the central government system. This marked the closing of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually developed into powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
