A recent study sought to answer this question by employing a range of experimental instruments, including DCTs, MQs and RIs. Participants included 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. Participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs either in their L1 or L2 levels. Then they were invited to attend a RI where they were required to think about their responses to the DCT situations.

The results showed that CLKs on average, did not adhere to the patterns of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this despite the fact that they could produce patterns that resembled natives. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their choices to learner-internal aspects such as their personalities and identities that are multilingual, as well as ongoing life histories. They also referred external factors, like relationship benefits. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors helped facilitate an easier performance with respect to the intercultural and linguistic standards of their university.

The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures or penalties they could face when their social norms were violated. They were concerned that their native interactants might perceive them as "foreigners" and believe that they are unintelligent.
