Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it can boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases as it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). When deciding to purchase or sell equipment, players can compare the level of an item. It's a sign of the item's condition and its quality. The item level can also be used to evaluate items when looking at a vendor's inventory.

The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the full description of the item, including its ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.

There are a few theories on how the calculation of an item's level is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a number that comes from a formula which calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. Item Stats

This is another aspect that could be changed by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to enhance. But, like base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis and the item compare interface wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the likelihood of locating items, the properties that are generated by loot, and the intensity of these properties. It does not, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is especially advantageous for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. These can also be increased by using anti-materials, such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) for a further +40 luck, or to increase the luck of the item to 140.

Additionally, certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be found in the shops or made with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are costly and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the success rate of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item in the event that it does not work.

The rate of success of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much the success rates can be improved and the chance of a failed upgrade cannot be greater than 100%..

The luck of an item upgrade can also influence the success of an upgrade. Every item has an initial success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects could be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
