Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear by adding new affixes that boost its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.

Typically, items that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base while objects with strong bases, such as eth titans do not vary significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces glyphs with another glyph the previous one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from the previous versions. Gear is now categorized in tracks and each item can only be upgraded so many times before it is "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, however the materials needed do not.
