The structure of DNA is composed of base pair arranged in a spiral around phosphate and sugar molecules. The sequence of bases found in each strand determines the phenotype, the appearance and behavior of an individual. Different changes and reshuffling of genetic material (known as alleles) during sexual reproduction cause variations in a population.

Fossils of the earliest human species, Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis were discovered in Africa, Asia, and Europe. These fossils, despite some differences in their appearance all support the hypothesis of modern humans' origins in Africa. Evidence from fossils and genetics suggest that early humans migrated from Africa into Asia and then Europe.
