It can also be machinized to create holes and voids which reduce its tensile strength but increases its modulus of elastic.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant against oxidation. It is therefore protected from rust. It also has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than metal, which means that it is less likely to change shape in response to heat. The properties of fatigue are superior to those of metal, so components made from carbon fiber will last longer than metal counterparts.

Carbon fiber is used in the tailplanes and fuselage of aircraft. The strength and lightness of the material has allowed designers to design aircraft that are safer and more efficient than they have ever been.
