Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and gear with new affixes that boost its stats base or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Usually, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, whereas items with strong bases such as Eth titans don't change in their stats following being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors, trinkets, and gathering tools. They give you an attribute benefit, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, found in loot, thrown away by enemies or as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades come with additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be above a certain level before they are upgraded.

If the player upgrades their gathering tool, and replaces the glyphs with a different one the old one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from previous versions in several important ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, but the materials needed do not.
