However, they do have a few flaws however, which prevent them from being our top choice. One of the Q5's shortcomings is its navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's therefore prone to get stuck on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

Still, it's very good, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a bare-floored home or office. It's also extremely quiet and can be used while you're at work or in school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on well and aren't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle however. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be replaced with one that is wet in just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its smart cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in tackling larger particles, like pet hair. It also has self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robotic hoover for carpets, but it isn't as effective as some of its competitors in terms of deep cleaning.

With a sleek circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba than the competition's compact models this mop and robot vacuum is among the most attractive designs in our reviews. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop to score an absolute 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a combination modern sensors, including a restructured light system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot cleaner with mop we tested that can completely self-refill and empty its base station, and it boasts industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, with an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work, or at night when you attempt to sleep.

It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.
