The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. And it's less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle, however. And, if you need to, you can switch the mopping pad for a dry one in just a few seconds.

The robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular look that looks much like a Roomba unit than the boxy models of the rivals. It's among our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It has advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that has an exemplary 10/10 in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot vacuums that mop in our tests that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, offering an easy mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work, or in the evening when you're trying to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, although it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are similarly capable and more attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's extremely powerful however it will cost you more and make more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features to help you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine like Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It comes with a multi-function dock that will automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and cleans and drys mop pads.

The smart robot uses the combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and identify obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its top rivals. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards however, it wasn't 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the house based on how dirty those areas are.

For larger houses, it's worth opting for a model with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean one particular area of your house via the app or voice commands. If you have lots of furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. Finally, a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up right where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than the price suggests. It has a great vacuuming performance, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad and a rotating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tested. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate a mapping run that collects data on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, arrange an area for cleaning or to prioritize your most filthy rooms to ensure better performance. The app has a range of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
