Many patients don't declare their asbestos exposure and don't seek medical attention. If mesothelioma is found experts may suggest an examination for a more accurate diagnosis. A biopsy is the removal of a small piece of tissue to be tested. This test will reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide a curative treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

If a mesothelioma has advanced and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. This is because the tumors are able to become resistant to certain treatments, and they may develop a recurrence. The specialist may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy alone to improve the prognosis for a patient.
