Asbestos exposure is only the one known cause of peritoneal mesthelioma. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they could irritate the abdominal tissues and cause cells to change. Over time, this can result in tumors that develop into mesothelioma in the peritoneum.

Exposure to asbestos often begins with work in construction or manufacturing. These industries could employ asbestos-containing products, such as fireproofing and insulation. Asbestos can also be present in household products, such as flooring and roof tiles. Even very low levels of exposure can put a person at risk for mesothelioma. Because of the lengthy period of latency the victims could be diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma many decades after their initial exposure.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma may mimic other conditions. It is often mistaken for hernias, digestive issues such as colitis or Crohn's, and other types of abdominal cancers. Many patients don't disclose their asbestos exposure, and do not seek medical care. When mesothelioma is detected experts may suggest an examination for a more precise diagnosis. A biopsy is the removal a small piece of tissue to be examined. This test can determine whether the mesothelioma has epithelioid (epidermoid), Sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide an effective treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, for example paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has advanced. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatment and may recur. The doctor might suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than chemotherapy alone.
