A biopsy involves the removal of only a small amount of affected tissue to test. This procedure can reveal the stage of mesothelioma as well as whether it is epithelioid biphasic or sarcomatoid.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide an effective treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, such as paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. The tumors could become resistant to treatment and recur. The specialist may recommend the combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than chemotherapy on its own.
