Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like crit chance and PvE Damage.

For example an item with the upgrade template ending in % will gain 3% attack damage every time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item upgrader mod's level. The cost increases as the item level rises.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a stat boost or to add an additional effect. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors, trading or looting. Some upgrades also have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment that has a slot to accommodate them. The item must have been at the very least upgraded to blue level for a component to be inserted. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and cannot be applied multiple times or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it's applied to (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). The player can have the maximum of five boost upgrades at one time; each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-level version of the item will appear in the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their gear even in the event that they don't know what will be improved following the reset.

The boost upgrade may be successful or not, the process can be costly and there is a significant chance that the item could be obsolete or even break when it fails; a unsuccessful upgrade could cause the destruction of Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the chance of failure. Certain upgrades also provide the player a bonus if they are reinserted.

Glyphs

Each Glyph has a particular range of values it can improve a statistic by, and the value is shown when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can decide to replace it with another Glyph with the same rank, or a higher rank, which will increase the value of the Glyph.

Glyphs can be found in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of a Gem Store bundle or purchase, with certain unlimited-use tools, and during Faction Crypt Raids. Each Faction Crypt has a chance to drop one of the numerous Glyphs and there are some rare Glyphs that can be found as drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

When you have the desired Glyphs then you have to attach them to your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a unique bonus that boosts the stats of a specific set of nodes that are within a radius of the Glyph. Based on the Glyph the bonus will be +40 to one of your primary stats, or +25 to two of your secondary stats.

Glyphs boost all nodes connected to them, which is why it is Best item upgrade to put Glyphs in strategic locations on the Graph. This will increase the impact. Druids, for example should position their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes. They might also consider placing them near their critical damage nodes.

Leveling

The item upgrade system allows players to increase the power of certain items by adding upgraded components. This is known as "upping". Each upgradeable item has an amount that determines its upgraded stats. Upgraded items may be leveled to a maximum of ilvl 385. Each level requires a different number of components to be reached, and the upgrade costs increase as the item gets upgraded.

Certain upgrades require a certain ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by making Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be found in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or bought from NPCs. Each completed Upgrade Recipe yields some Technology Points. These points can be used for upgrading an item. When enough points have been earned, you will be eligible to claim the upgrade and get its extra bonuses.

When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a new item of the same kind. The same armor can be transformed into the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item also has its own set bonus. This could be a problem in that it could cause the item to become more expensive if you do not require it.

Upgrades to items can be rerolled, if the player has enough reroll tokens in order to do so. The item will be replaced by a brand new one that is based on a level 1 base and totally different bonuses. This is a good option for certain items, however it shouldn't be repeated often, as it could waste a lot of resources.

Some upgrades can increase their value and allow players to personalize their gear. A good example of this is Dolphin's Gift, which gives an advantage when a player is repeatedly in and out of the water (or is able to swim like dolphins). This can be upgraded several times, each time increasing the max roll by 10 points. This item is extremely valuable in PvP as the Best item upgrade version of it could be worth between 20 and 50 times its non-upp'd value.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items allows players to boost the quality of their equippable gear--armor, weapons and trinkets over ilvl 385 by offering the appropriate items and currency to an NPC that upgrades items. The upgrade of armor set pieces will also increase the defense base of the piece, whereas upgrading weapon items will increase the base damage and the strength and dexterity required to meet the upgraded equipment's requirements.

Each item can be upgraded a maximum of five times, with the exception of hero gear that can have eight upgrades. Each time you upgrade a piece of equipment, it has a chance of failing. If an item does not upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it gained like the chance to crit, attack damage, or additional effects (such as increased heal over time or the speed of reloading). However, the player can still continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

Whenever an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest. This means that if a weapon gains an increase in the chance of crit, the increase is applied prior to any increase in attack damage. Slots is a new attribute that has been added to item definitions. The value is recalculated each time an upgrade occurs.

The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is based on its rarity rating and upgrade slot count. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equivalent to the value of the base item.
