Like other top iRobot models (including the top choice), they use smart mapping technology to create detailed floor plans that avoid home-based obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also have Carpet Boost, a feature that increases its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very good robot vacuum scores in our bare floor tests, and they're particularly adept in removing pet hair. However, they do have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to become entangled in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.

It's still a great option for those who want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also very quiet and works while you are at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming feature that's offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on well and aren't able to take on dried-on debris. The Q5 does have self-emptying docks, however. If you're in need of it mop, the mopping pad can be swapped for a wet one in just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a compact, sleek package. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it easy to clean and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also features a self-emptying bin with powerful suction and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, but it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop uses sensor technology that can stay clear of obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time and provide cleaner and more efficient cleaning. You can alter its cleaning schedule and set up zones with the well-designed app. It comes with a battery life that is comparable to other models.

You can instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mop and extend them when it's in a carpeted area, which helps prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm can also be used to reach under low-lying furnishings and along baseboards. It's not as efficient on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

It also did a good job cleaning a variety of floors and rooms with different flooring types, including some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top-notch and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog socks, turds, shoes, and bundles of cables.

It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically emptys into its base, and supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature we haven't seen before on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With an elegant circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba rather than the boxes, this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive designs in our reviews. The latest model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features, like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that has a perfect 10 in our testing due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot vacuum that mops we tested that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, with a simple mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's an eerily noisy device which could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work or in the evening as you attempt to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, but it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are similarly capable and look better. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and some extra cost, this is a very capable two-in-one that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot vacuum and mop. It has a range of advanced features that make you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes the care of mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than its top competitors. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has an maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home according to the amount of dirt they tend to be.

If you have a larger home, it's worth selecting a robot that comes with zones or spot cleaning modes. This lets you instruct the robot on which part of your home needs to be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have lot furniture. For families with busy schedules, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off can be very beneficial.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than the price suggests. It has a great vacuuming performance and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion, which is cleaner than the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. And it's highly self-sufficient with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to create an automatic spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize your dirtiest areas to improve performance. The app has a range of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

It is excellent at vacuuming, but it's more likely to get caught in low thresholds. It also has a higher noise than other top robot vacuums we have test. It also has a less intuitive app and a tiny base station that doesn't double as an emptying bin.
