Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase the rarity of an item or mark Level and boost additional stats.

Item Level

The item level can be seen by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the full description of the item, as well as its value. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each item level. Armor, shields and weapons come with a default Luck value of 40. These items can then be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant a further +40 Luck or to increase the luck of the item up to 140.

Certain items, such as the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be crafted to increase the damage dealt by any ability that is able to deal damage by 5percent. These items are available in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are a costly process and not every upgrade item will be successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.

When you upgrade an item upgrader mod the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading that item, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on how much the success rates can be improved and the chance of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an upgrade is also affected by the Luck of that item. Each item has an overall success rate of 25 percent and each item with Luck increases this chance by 5%.

The upgrade overlays for items are rendered above items in the inventory. This could block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
