Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses like damage from PvE and crit chance.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, weapons and armor to provide them with a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. They can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment that has a slot for them. The item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level for a component to be used. In contrast to other mods components can only be used once and cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A suffix or prefix can be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it is used on (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players create stronger versions of the equipment that require less Upgrade Crystals than is required to achieve the same upgrade level through normal methods.

A boost upgrade is a way to alter the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be created at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them from the cash shop, or by getting them from enemies while upgrading other gear.

The player can have up to five boost upgrades at a time. Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-level version of the item will drop at the time of the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to keep improving their equipment even if they're uncertain of how much they'll improve following a subsequent reset.

If a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process may be costly and there is a substantial chance that the item could become obsolete or even break if it fails. Leveling

The upgrade system of items allows players to increase the power of certain items by introducing upgraded components. This is commonly known as "upping". Each upgradeable item is assigned a level that determines the final statistics. Upgraded items may be leveled to a maximum of ilvl 385. Each level requires a different number of components to reach and the cost of upgrading increase as the item is upgraded.

Some upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient can be obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or purchased from some NPCs. Each completed Upgrade Recipe yields some Technology Points. When a player upgrades an item, the base item is replaced with a different item of the same type. This means that the same armor piece will get a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will have its own set bonus. This could be a drawback, as the item can be more expensive even if you don't require it.
